Can you put a price on the value of good teamwork?
What value does a team performing well have?
Let’s consider what happens when a team underperforms… What do we mean by this? Perhaps the team doesn’t follow a process, perhaps there are internal struggles between personnel – bickering, one up Manship, trust issues. They don’t follow the Manager, they are always looking to leave. Sickness records are pretty bad and people work to rule – no extras. All of this costs time and money and worse, company reputation. A blame culture is an expensive problem to have.
Let me ask you this – how many times have you walked into a shop and heard the “customer service advisors” bitching to each other about the company in front of their customers. The worst one I experienced was being served by a young lady who was on her mobile bitching about the company that I was there buying from! Shocking!
What changes when a team feels invested?
So being invested means having the business’ back. The person takes responsibility for their role – for the company, for their colleagues. They ensure that what they are doing every day in every task, is to the best of their own ability. They ask for help, they support others when they need it – and they speak and reflect highly the business they are loyal to. Financially for the business owner, this means they get to keep their top talent, they get to retain and attract more of the same, the business reputation grows experientially without requiring a marketing budget – people LOVE to talk about great customer services because sadly it is so uncommon these days!
How does team building help?
So it might sound obvious, but helping a team to feel invested personally and as a group as well as a company ensures that the team collectively and individually knows that they are valued and important. They get to practise skills that they need daily, but not in an obvious way. A company that actively team builds correctly will ensure the right balance of fun and learning happens and the day moves on bringing memories and stories long after the event. As a team-building and leadership specialist, I love hearing from people, months after the event, saying that something they learnt on the day helped them with a situation they had at work! Makes my day!
