Learning new things helps with mental health. Find out why.

How does learning new things help with mental health?

Have you noticed that during the lockdown, a lot of people were taking up new hobbies, creating things, learning things, and sharing things? Well, it got me wondering why… and then I recognised that I had in fact done it myself!

I totally revamped my dull garden into a colourful explosion. Created resin products as Christmas presents. I even learnt how to do acrylic nails (well that one was more a necessity than a choice) and I used saws, a glue gun, a hammer!! So what was that all about?

When we get “pushed” into a scenario we have no choice in, how do we feel? We feel angry, lost, hurt, and maybe ineffective. Our confidence takes a massive bashing if we can’t do what we are good at, and be able to demonstrate it to others. Where do we get our feedback for a job well done, if either we aren’t doing that job, or we are doing it in isolation? No one sees just how hard we have worked!

So, to get our feedback, our joy, our feeling of being useful back what do we do? We turn to something we CAN do or that we always wanted to try, privately. And, if we fail, no one needs to know… but if we succeed – MAJOR BRAGGING RIGHTS!

Learning and achieving can give us a feeling of worth. A feeling of being in control and empowered affects our morale tremendously.

What about us?

Clarify Training has been taking a break – who on earth is able to get a trainer in a room with 6 – 8 people to learn something new at this time? People kept nagging me to take the training online, but I refused. I LOVE being in a room with people, giving them my energy, reading their body language, sharing some vibes. I just don’t feel that online does that as well as I like. So I have been doing other things; developing other parts of the business and I have enjoyed it.

However, now things are getting easier, it is time to think about getting back out there. Getting people back into learning and growing mode – in the areas they need it most professionally.

Developing great Managers – who now, more than ever need to be adaptable! These Managers will need to manage people who have experienced all the effects of the Lockdown and are struggling to get back to “normal”. Now more than ever, Managers need to adapt and be so much more understanding of what their team NEEDS to perform.
