management training a lightbulb moment

I have a story to share from one of my management training sessions… let me know when you are sitting comfortably, I will begin…

The other day I was coaching a lovely Manager who has some issues with the way he works with some staff members.  There were different reasons why particular people were difficult to work with for him – down to personality types, which I will do a future blog about soon…  But anyway, one of the things he identified was that he easily holds a grudge.  The biggest ones are the ones that go against his moral values – which makes perfect sense.  And I was talking this through with him and something occurred to me… We try very hard to forgive peoples actions – which is SO difficult when they go against our own moral codes.  But how about this instead – don’t try to forgive their actions, you simply can’t, it is too huge to contemplate this – instead, focus on forgiving them for not meeting you expectations!  MIC DROP!

Who owns your expectations?  YOU DO

Did you communicate your expectations to that person?  DOUBTFULLY

Is the gap between what they achieved and what you expected huge?  LIKELY

Is it easier to forgive than the actual things they did?  DEFINITELY

Do we feel better knowing this?  HELL YES!

It got me thinking about my own personal experiences with my own family members and to be honest, it bought me some peace.  I hope it does you too 😊
